More InformationFenced Area with Moufflons
The island’s national symbol, the Moufflon, is unique to Cyprus and can be found within the mountainous forests of Troodos. Next to the Platania Excursion area, find the enclosure where one can admire this majestic wild creature.
The Moufflon (Ovis orientalis ophion) descend from wild sheep and is the largest endemic species of the island. It is believed it was brought to the island in 8000 BC and has thrived on the mountains ever since. The pride and joy of the Cypriot people and the crown jewel of the forest the Moufflon is the most important representative of the island’s fauna. Depicted in ancient vases and pottery from the past, the tradition continues to this day as it is used as the symbol of Cyprus in coins, stamps and trademarks representing Cyprus.
The roots of the Moufflon originate from the Asiatic orientalis, and is a species of racial and seasonal dimorphism. Males carry heavy sickle horns and are larger and heavier than females. Their weight can reach to 35 kilos for males and 25 kilos for females. During the winter the males have heavy dark color, while in the summer their coat becomes lighter in both color and weight. They are shy animals and used to be an important food source for the people of Cyprus. Today it strictly protected and monitored, as they became nearly extinct.

More InformationMuseum of The Cyprus Railway
In a journey through history of a rich past, the small island of Cyprus, though it may not have signs of it, once operated a railway extending from Famagusta in the east to Morfou in the west. The Cyprus Government Railway’s (CGR) first train journey begun in 1905 and on the Monday of December 31st 1951, the last train left Nicosia station and ended in Famagusta marking the end of an era.
With a non-existent road network, the railway system revolutionized the connection between major towns of the island and encourage trade. Mineral railways connected Cyprus mines and allowed trade as well as used to carry post, and distribute mail throughout the island. The improvement of the road network however resulted to the decline of the CGR.
A testimony in time is the old railway station near Evrychou village, where the Cyprus Railway Museum in now housed. At the unique museum explore original documents, drawings and photos depicting a historic era, as well as objects related to the old railway. More InformationMuseum of EOKA fighters’ sacrifice
The involvement of the village of Kourdali in the island’s historic EOKA struggle was noteworthy. They have sheltered for two months the leader George –Grivas Dighenis. And on the fateful day of June 20th 1958, one of the most terrible explosions occurred. The house offering shelter to the liberation fighters was blown to pieces and with it claiming the lives of EOKA fighters Andreas Patsalidis aged 25 years, Kostas Anaxagoras 23 years old, Alekos Konstantinos 23 years old and Panagiotis Georgiadis 28 years old, who was wanted as he was the leader of a group of the region.
The mysterious conditions of the explosion were never solved, as it happened during a secret training in the construction of new explosives to be used by the fighters. Since, many EOKA’s weapons and ammunition was hid in the house, the fighters were in a discussion to move them after an impending raid by the British army. The subsequent explosion claimed the lives of the men in the house at the time.
In this historic area of the accident, personal items of the heroes and photographs with explanatory texts stand as a testimony of that ill-fated day.

During the Liberation Struggle EOKA in 1955-1959, the fighters had hideouts throughout the island. The hideout located in the heart of the village of Palaichori was used by the hero Grogoris Afxentiou. It was the basement of the house of Andreas ad Maritsa Karaolis, built following the hero’s instructions in the summer of 1956.
A complex of two hideouts one in a traditional oven and other under a stone built staircase next to the oven. The second was kept a secret from most of his allies by Afxentou. It provided refuge to the hero after he was wounded at the Zoopigi battle in 1957. The oven was torn down following Afxentiou’s orders but the hideout under the stairs remained intact.
The hideout was restored in 1977, by the ‘Historical Remembrance Council of EOKA 1955-1959’ and is now open to the public to admire and travel to one of the most historic times in Cypriot history. Read about the couple who housed the hideout and the action during the fight.
