Commandaria Villages

Also known as the ‘Kings wine’ Commandaria or Koummandaria is a Wine of Controlled Denomination of origin wine dating back to the 12th century, made in the Commandaria region villages. Found on the southern slopes of Troodos, north of Lemesos (Limassol) it comprises of 14 designated villages. Visitors can discover the local wine production in small wineries operating in some villages.

The appropriately named ‘vin de Commanderie’ or ‘Koumandaria wine’ is believed to be one of the oldest named wines in the world, having been referred to by its name for eight centuries.

Lania Village

Located at an altitude of 570 meter, the traditional village of Lania, sits on the foothills of Troodos mountain range.

Its existence dates back to the Late Bronze Age 1600 BC. According to tradition the name Lania is derived either from the name Lana, the daughter of Dionysus, God of Wine or the word ‘valania’ meaning acorn due to the fruit of the oak tree thriving in the region.

Trimiklini Village

Engulfed by high mountaintops, Trimiklini village sits at an altitude of 545 meters. Crossed by the Kouris river on the south, vineyards, almond, olive and fruit trees, mainly peach, nectarine, pear and plum trees are cultivated.

Doros Village

Situated on a hills at an altitude of 470 meters, the village of Doros or Thoros, hides away amongst almond trees and grape vines. Its history dates back to 700 BC after the excavation of the ancient tomb.

Silikou Village

Built at an altitude of 650 meters, the quaint village of Silikou lies in the Kouris Valley. Once inhabited by both Greek and Turkish Cypriot residents, now it is mainly inhabited by Greek Cypriots.

Agios Georgios Village

Found at an altitude of 550 meters, amongst the Kourri valley is the village of Agios Georgios (Sylikou).

The crops cultivated in the village are black grapes, sultanas, grains, carob, olive, almond and fruit trees. Sample some delectable wine, the traditional spirit of zivania, and the sweets made from grape juice palouzes and soutzioukos.

Monagri Village

The small wine village of Agios Konstantinos is found 760 meters above sea level, on the southern foot of Papoutsa mountain. Scenic landscapes stretch around is decorated with vineyards, used for the production of the ancient sweet wine Commandaria, almond, olive and citrus trees.

Perched on the hills of the Pitsilia region, at an altitude of 885 meters, is the small village of Zoopigi.
