Commandaria Villages
The appropriately named ‘vin de Commanderie’ or ‘Koumandaria wine’ is believed to be one of the oldest named wines in the world, having been referred to by its name for eight centuries.
Lania Village
Located at an altitude of 570 meter, the traditional village of Lania, sits on the foothills of Troodos mountain range.
Its existence dates back to the Late Bronze Age 1600 BC. According to tradition the name Lania is derived either from the name Lana, the daughter of Dionysus, God of Wine or the word ‘valania’ meaning acorn due to the fruit of the oak tree thriving in the region.

Explore the picturesque village, decorated with traditional stone built houses coloured by verdant vegetation overflowing the courtyards. Visit the church of Panagua Valana, in the village centre and the 16th century chapel of Panagia Valana, just outside the village.
Discover culture and history ate the old wine press, the Commandaria Storage Museum and the olive press. Sample decadent Cypriot cuisine at the local taverns. Attracting visitors all year round, every May the women of the village open their homes in the ‘Lanes and Courtyards of Lania’ event and offer an opportunity to experience rural life and hospitality.

Engulfed by high mountaintops, Trimiklini village sits at an altitude of 545 meters. Crossed by the Kouris river on the south, vineyards, almond, olive and fruit trees, mainly peach, nectarine, pear and plum trees are cultivated.

Stroll through the village and unearth the most ancient Venetian bridge of the village, built by river stones on the banks of the river Kouris, made up of three consecutive arches. Discover the unique tow-storey bridge, the only one found on the island. The first section was constructed in 1901, while the second storey was built in 1917. Built at an altitude of 650 meters, the quaint village of Silikou lies in the Kouris Valley. Once inhabited by both Greek and Turkish Cypriot residents, now it is mainly inhabited by Greek Cypriots.
Stroll around the village and discover the four churches dotted around. The main church is dedicated to Saint George, built in 1818, the church of Panagia Syrkas, was built in the 19th century in the ruins of a large medieval grape press and the church of Saint John the Baptist, recently restored. In addition, visit the church of Saint Demetrius, built on the foundation of the old church.
Take in the picturesque cobblestone alleys winding within traditional houses, built with stone and decorated with wood details. Visit the Commndaria Museum, and learn more about the production of the ancient wine and the Olive Museum exhibiting the old olive press and rural life of the past. Explore the drinking water springs found around the village and the cluster of old olive trees dating back to 1300 AD.

As a result of the, the village operated pyrite and chalcopyrite mines as well as a tile and brick production quarry, now standing as a part of history frozen in time. Similarly, two old olive mill press one in the courtyard of St. Epiphanious and in the olive mill of the Virgin Mary, are what is left of the old tradition of oil production.
On the south of the old school is the ‘Winery’, where the processing of grapes was performed on location to produce Commandaria. For fifteen days the stadium, the threshing and the surrounding fields were filled with laid out grapes left to dry.
Visit the monastery of Panagia Faneromenis Amiros, built in the 12th century and the church of Saint Epiphanius. In adition, visit the chapel of the Virgin Mary of Chrysohalassa built in 1700s and the Holy Mount of Panagia Chrysohalousa.

Twenty-two kilometres from the town of Limassol, is the village of Gerasa. Perched on the slopes of mount Papoutsa, at an altitude of 335 meters, the village offers visitors a tranquil break in the countryside.
