Wine Villages


Perched on the foothills of Troodos, are 14 picturesque villages renowned for their wine production.; known as the wine villages. Reach them either via the Limassol – Pafos road, turning right at Erimi village or via the Limassol – Platres road. Maintaining traditional architecture stone built houses and cobbled streets are surrounded by vineyards. Visit the villages and sample along with exquisite wine, delicacies made from grape juice as well as pastries and homemade breads known as koilani glitzista and arkatena.

Marathasa Valley


Home to some of the region’s most important churches and monasteries and famous for its cherry trees the Marathasa valley has many to offer to a visitor. Visit picturesque villages such as Kalopanagiotis, Moutoullas and Pedoulas for a taste of Cypriot rural life.

Kalopanayiotis

  • The Agios Ioannis Lambadistis church with the 3 churches dating from the 11th century until the 16th century. (Open daily 9.00-13.00, 16.00-18.00)
  • The byzantine icon museum of the Lambadistis Monastery. (Open 9.30-17.00 and Sundays 11.00-15.30)

The quaint village of Oikos is located acroos Kalopanayiotis village. If you climb uphill on the road to Kykkos, past Gerakies, reach the famous Panagia tou Kykkou monastery.

Kykkos

  1. The Monastery of Kykkos was founded at the end of the 11th century during the reign of Emperor Alexios Komnenos I and was dedicated to Panagia ( the Virgin Mary). Housed inside is one of three reacuse icons of The Virgin Mary attributed to Apostle Luke.
  2. The monastery museum is open daily 10.00-18.00
  3. Visit the tomb of the island’s first president, Archbishop Makarios.

Continue your journey towards the verdant villages pf Tsakkistra and Kambos.

Kambos

  • Also knon as Kambos tis Tsakkistras, the quaint village offers numerous churches and chapels to see.

Climb uphill on the route towards Troodos, reaching Pedoula and subsequently Moutoulla.

Pedoulas

  • Pedoulas Folkloric museum (Open Tuesday till Sunday 9.30-16.00)
  • Pedoulas Byzantine museum (Open Tuesday till Sunday 10.00-16.00)
  • The ancient church of Archangel Michael (UNESCO monument). The church is open daily 10.30-17.00.

Moutoullas

  • Visit the Panagia tou Moutoulla churcha (UNESCO monument) for visits ask the key from the village coffeehouse.

Continuing the uphill drive, you wil reach the highest village of the island, Prodromos and near it the Panagia tis Trikoukkiotissas monastery.

Descend from Prodromos, and explore the rest of the Marathasa villages, such as Lemithou, Paliomio, Agio Dometio, Tris Elies and Kaminaria.

Quaint villages dotted among the Solea valley are homes to UNESCO heritage Byzantine churches, traditional architecture and shed light on Cyprus’ history. Located 56km both from Lefkosia and Limassol explore the villages to unearth cobblestone streets and traditional accommodation and restaurants decorated with the smell and sound of pine trees, mountains and winding rivers. Galata and Kakopetria are popular amongst the villages with old mills, traditional cuisines and architecture. Other villages worth mentioning are Evrychou, Flasou and Korakou.

Kakopetria

For adventure enthusiasts, visit the Adventure Mountain Park theme park for an opportunity to rock climb, ice skate and paintball.

Climb uphill to the Mandaris mountain range, discover the signs showing the network trails the area has to offer.

The two most popular are

  1. Tisia tis Mandaris (circular) length 3km. Start near the fire lookout station of Mandaris, uniquely impressive trail of immense geological value with tall cliffs.
  2. Mandaris Fire lookout- Doxa si o theos (linera) length 3.8km. Start near the Mandaris fire lookout station or from the Kyperounta- Caves (Spilion) main road. The trail offers a view in all directions.

Travelling downhill from Mandaris the journey continues at Lagoudera, Plistipo, Alona, Platanistasa, Aska and Fterikoudi with noteworthy religious monuments and the famous hazelnut forest.

As a mountain which formed over 92 million years ago, boasts towering forests and rock formations, made up of rocks of the earth’s mantle. Venture into one of the hike or bicycle routes or visit one of the Centres to learn more about this wonder of nature.

The Centres include:

  • Troodos Geopark visitor centre at the Amiantos mine exhibits all the information of the area’s geology. The centre is open daily except Monday 9.00-16.00
  • Troodos Botanical garden ‘A. G. Leventis’ inside the old Amiantos mine. Boasting 150 flora species, engulf yourself in enchanting aromas. Open daily 9.00 until 14.00 and on weekends until 16.00
  • The Troodos environmental centre located near the Troodos square, offers information about the region’s history and includes representation of habitats with stuffed animals and birds. Open daily 10.00 until 16.00 Phone: +357 25420144

Waterfalls

As the winter’s sown melts and the rivers come to life, gushing waters cascade the mountainous area creating the majestic spectacle of waterfalls. Engulfed within lush forests fragranced by wild shrubs with melodies of nightingales, are the jewels of nature. Discover the famous Kaledonia waterfall, the Millomeris waterfall, holding the title of the highest waterfall of the islands, the Hantara waterfall and the Mesa Potamos waterfall. Trek along the nature trails and learn more about the endemic flora and fauna as well as admiring unforgettable landscape views.

  • Artemis (circular) Length 7km start 300 meters from the point connecting the road to the Chionistra and the Troodos- Prodromos road.
  • Atalanti (circular) Length 14km start Troodos square
  • Persefoni trail (linear) length 3km start 150meters north of the Troodoa square towards the police station.

Monasteries

An island with a deep religious background offers numerous ancient chapels, churches and monasteries each ready with its own story to tell and boasting magnificent art. Two unique monasteries are the Monastery of Panayia Trooditissa located 5km northwest of Platres and the Timios Prodoromos Monastery at Mesa Potamos.

Wine Routes

With a history in wine making dating back to the Bronze age, Cyprus has been in the forefront of wine production for over 5,000 years. The Mediterranean climate and the fertile slopes of the Troodos mountain range created the ideal environment for vineyards to blossom. The development of indigenous varieties as well as the cultivation of other grape varieties, warrants the creation of exquisite wine.

Throughout the southern slopes of Troodos basking in the Mediterranean sun, discover wineries ready to offer culture and history in a glass. Take the chance to admire natural beauty, meet locals and explore rural life.

The Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) co-funded by EU Structural Funds, created ‘The Cyprus Wine Routes’. Visitors can follow signposted routes, allowing them to experience grape harvest, taste traditional food accompanied by plenty of wine.

KRASOCHORIA

LIMASSOL WINE VILLAGES

Overlooking the sea, on the slopes of Troodos mountain are the renowned villages ‘Krasochoria’. Their name ‘Krasochoria’ translates to wine villages, denoting their rich history in wine production. Twenty villages intertwined with the greatest concentration of wineries found on the island promise inebriating landscape views, traditional architecture and picture perfect moments. COMMANDARIA

Savor royalty and journey back in time with the amber colored sweet wine known as Commandaria (Koumandaria). The world’s oldest named wine still in production dating back to 800 BC, is produced by fourteen designated villages dating back to the 12th century where the knights of St. John first begun production. Indigenous wine varieties are harvested and dried to enhance their sweet flavor. Nestled beside century old sights, like the Laneia wine press, are local wineries offering exceptional wine and stunning views. Journey to the age of the crusades by visiting the medieval castle of Kolossi along the way.
